The U.S. Space Force is launching a significant procurement initiative for next-generation communications satellites, essential for the nation’s nuclear command, control, and communications network. This initiative, estimated at $8 billion and known as Evolved Strategic SATCOM (ESS), aims to supplement and eventually replace the current Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellite constellation. The new system will offer crucial jam-resistant communication channels for the National Command Authorities and deployed forces globally, including coverage in the North Polar region – a capability the current system lacks.
Come hear how the team developed and executed an acquisition strategy that encourages innovations, rapid user feedback, and a “show-me” approach to award performer, while targeting modern iterative software development methodologies (Agile), modern tools and techniques (DevSecOps)), and human-centered design processes for the Mission Planning Applications Suite, evolving with the highest levels of cybersecurity, mission assurance, and resiliency measures.
