During a recent trip to Ukraine, Brad Halsey was blown away by the speed at which technology is evolving on the front lines and said it was unlike anything he had witnessed in Iraq or Afghanistan. Former marketing specialists, entrepreneurs, tinkerers, and everyone else are using open-source resources like YouTube and GitHub to build technologies and test them in real-time alongside the Ukrainian military in the fight against Russia. Civilians with no prior drone or radio experience are developing transformative and lethal prototypes that are severely disrupting the monolithic Cold War edifice that is the Russian military. And we better take notice. Because WE will be the monolithic Cold War edifice that gets eviscerated in our next conflict if we don’t embrace innovation. In discussions about a peer-to-peer conflict experts warn that aircraft and their carriers will be targeted and destroyed; ships will be sunk; satellites will be incapacitated; and power and internet connectivity decimated.
