Event Description:
Fraud poses a significant risk to program integrity and erodes public trust in the government. Learn leading practices for managing fraud risks and how to employ a Fraud Risk Framework. Acquisition procurement fraud includes but is not limited to billing for work not performed, counterfeit parts, disguised conflicts of interest, and submitting false documentation for contractor payments.
GAO provides Congress and federal agencies with fact-based, non-partisan information that can improve government operations and save taxpayers billions of dollars. DAU is pleased to host GAO as they share their research and analysis about fraud risk with the Defense Acquisition Workforce.

Assistant Director, GAO
Erica Varner is an Assistant Director within the Forensic Audits and Investigative Service (FAIS) team at GAO. Ms. Varner has over 20 years of experience working on fraud-related issues. At GAO, she has led projects in the areas of Federal Employment Compensation, Unemployment insurance, Disability Benefits, and the Child Care Development Fund. Prior to joining GAO, Ms. Varner worked for the Office of Inspector General with the Department of Justice and Social Security Administration.
Senior Analyst, GAO
Brenda Mittelbuscher is a Senior Analyst with GAO and has spent her career primarily working in the agency's fraud and contracting areas. Her recent work has focused on fraud risks in federal disaster aid programs and federal benefit programs. She holds a BA in Math & Economics from Willamette University and an MS in Policy Analytics from Carnegie Mellon University.
Professor of Contract Management, DAU
Maj John Hofmann is a Professor of Contract Management at the Defense Acquisition University, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Maj Hofmann enlisted in the Air Force in 2002 as a telecommunications specialist. He received his commission through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Program at Wright State University in 2006. He has held numerous contracting positions including Contracting Officer, Flight Commander, Deputy Branch Chief, Deputy RCC Chief, Contract Negotiator, Staff Officer and Contract Manager. Prior to his current position, Maj Hofmann was the Commander of the 380th Expeditionary Contracting Squadron at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates.
