Mr. Merkel has a total of thirty-seven (37) years with the Department of Defense. His twenty-nine (29) year military career included seventeen (17) years as a Naval Aviator, followed by assignments with OPNAV N8 and N9 in the Pentagon, and with the Joint Special Operations Command. Mr. Merkel has an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, and extensive industry experience. As a DoD civilian, he bought Joint Primary Air Training System (JPATS) aircraft for the Navy at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. Mr. Merkel is currently a Professor of Financial Management at the Defense Acquisition University in Kettering, OH.
Lt Col John Ellis, USAF
Professor of Contract Management, DAU
Lt Col John Ellis is a Professor of Contract Management at the Defense Acquisition University, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Lt Col Ellis entered the Air Force in May 2009. After receiving his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Alabama in May 2009. Lt Col Ellis has served as a Contracting Officer in Support of the Air Operations Center at Hanscom Air Force Base (AFB), Mass, served as the Congressional Liaison Officer for the Air Force Installation Management Support Center. Prior to his current position, Lt Col Ellis was the Commander of the 380th Expeditionary Contracting Squadron at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates.
