This DAU Lunch and Learn Webinar was presented on 19 June 2019. DAU Lunch and Learn Speakers Background: Pat Barker and John Driessnack are both Professors of Program Management at the Defense Systems Management College at DAU. They have done this stuff for a living, teach it and consult with major organizations about it. "Hey boss, I know I said we were "green" yesterday but as it turns out if we don't get $35M to the prime by next Wednesday they will have to stop work."Ooops. Maybe it's time to get some of that cool "PMO Situational Awareness (SA) stuff. Life would be so much nicer if we could receive and digest performance information one piece at a time. However, performance information comes at us simultaneously from multiple directions and disciplines and we aren't as prepared to digest and use it as we could be. That does not have to be the case. PMO Situational Awareness (SA) is all about you, your team and your stakeholders establishing and maintaining an integrated picture of cost, risk, schedule and performance in order to anticipate program outcomes and support proactive decision making. Moreover, the SA information you need means will depend on the level at which you make decisions. Are you at a control account? IPT? Project? Program? Portfolio? Creating and sustaining a robust SA-producing system is a never-ending tradeoff between what kind of information you want and what it will take to get it. It all starts with basic questions such as "do we know what we are supposed to be doing?" and "what does 'done' look like?" to name a few. Achieving robust levels of SA is no simple feat, but it not necessarily expensive. It all starts with a little leadership and a willingness to learn some new tricks.
